Eligibility Requirements, Application and Candidacy Processes

An individual interested in pursuing board certification in intraoperative monitoring (BCS-IOM) must first fulfill all eligibility requirements, and then complete the application and candidacy processes.

  1. Interested individuals shall contact the American Audiology Board of Intraoperative Monitoring (AABIOM) and request application materials(or click on the link at the bottomof the page). AABIOM will send each interested audiologist an application packet containing an application form, suggested reading materials and an Advanced Knowledge and Skills Checklist to guide the applicant through the specialty recognition process.

  2. Each applicant will submit to AABIOM a completed application packet. The application packet includes the following:

SECTION I: APPLICATION

SECTION II: EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSING

SECTION III: EXPERIENCE

SECTION IV: CASE/PATIENT LOG

SECTION V: ATTESTATIONS (AT LEAST 2 SURGEONS IN DIFFERENT SPECIALTIES AND 1 OR MORE AUDIOLOGIST SPECIALISTS OR EQUIVALENT IN NIOM)


AABIOM will review each application packet and determine if the applicant has met the above criteria successfully. Within two (2) months of receipt of the completed application packet, the applicant will be notified of eligibility status and whether to proceed with the candidacy process for specialty recognition.

Note: Audiologists with current D.ABNM status acquired prior to April 1, 2013 are exempt from the written exam requirement. Please provide documentation of CCC-A and D.ABNM credentials with the completed application.

Continuing Education

Effective January 1, 2014, the Clinical Specialty Certification (CSC) program replaced the previous Clinical Specialty Recognition (CSR) program. All individuals whose Application for Specialty Certification is received by the Specialty Certification Board on or after January 1, 2014, will be evaluated on the requirements in effect at the time of submission. There must be a provision for documenting specialized preparation that goes beyond the preparation specified to satisfy the requirements for the CCC that includes 6 CEUs (60 contact hours) in the area of specialty certification in the immediate 3 years prior to applying and documented evidence of intermediate or advanced continuing education.
